In its very first tests, the Me 262 prototype was powered not by a jet, but a piston engine. With this power plant, the aircraft handled well but was underpowered. In its first flight with the BMW jets, both of the Me 262's engines failed. Fortunately for the test pilot, the plane still had its piston engine in the nose and he landed safely.
